Websites ending with pedia

Websites ending with pedia

In this article, I have attempted to assess the SEO aspect of websites ending with pedia. SEO stands for search engine optimization and refers to how searchable, informative and accessible a page is.

Generally we have been programmed to believe that wikipedia is the only such website whose name ends with pedia. However that is incorrect. There are literally 100’s of websites ending with pedia. I have taken a cross-section of such web-sites from various genres and tried to assess the SEO performance of pedia/ wiki websites. Some of the key parameters I have assessed are Alexa Rank, Google PageRank, MozRank, visits/day and web-site worth.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a free-access, free-content Internet encyclopedia, supported and hosted by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Those who can access the site can edit most of its articles. Wikipedia is ranked among the ten most popular websites, and constitutes the Internet’s largest and most popular general reference work. However there have been concerns that Wikipedia is not at all neutral and is completely dominated by the West and Marxists[1].

Encyclopedia

Encyclopedia.com has more than 100 trusted sources, including encyclopedias, dictionaries, and thesauruses with facts, definitions, biographies, synonyms, pronunciation keys, word origins, and abbreviations. Encyclopedia.com provides reference entries from sources like Oxford University Press and Columbia Encyclopedia.

Metapedia

Metapedia is an electronic encyclopedia which focuses on culture, art, science, philosophy and politics. Its focus is on topics that usually are not covered in — i.e. that falls outside of — mainstream encyclopedias. It contains far-right, white nationalist, white supremacist, white separatist, antisemitic, and neo-Nazi points of view.

Conservapedia

Conservapedia is an English-language wiki encyclopedia project written from an American conservative, Young Earth creationist, and Christian fundamentalist point of view. The website was started in 2006 by American homeschool teacher and attorney Andrew Schlafly, son of conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly, to counter what he perceived as a liberal bias present in Wikipedia.

Scholarpedia

Scholarpedia is an English-language online wiki-based encyclopedia with features commonly associated with open-access online academic journals, which aims to have quality content. Scholarpedia articles are written by invited expert authors and are subject to peer review.

Jurispedia

  • URL: http://www.jurispedia.org/
  • Alexa Rank – 190,357
  • Google PageRank – 5/10
  • Moz Rank – 3.51/10
  • Estimated visits per day – 4,790 visits / day
  • Estimated Worth – $ 12,130

JurisPedia  is a wiki encyclopedia of academic law in many languages, currently available in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Spanish and Dutch. It was started in October 2004, inspired in part by Wikipedia and the Enciclopedia Libre (University of Seville).

Appropedia

Appropedia is a wiki website for collaborative solutions in sustainability, poverty reduction and international development, with a particular focus on appropriate technology.

Hindupedia

Hindupedia, the Hindu Encyclopedia, is devoted to educating the public about all aspects of Hinduism ranging from history and philosophy to current events that impact Hindus. They are the only online Hindu encyclopedia that provides the public with a traditional perspective on Hindu religion and way of life.

Uncyclopedia

Uncyclopedia is a satirical website that parodies Wikipedia. Its logo, a hollow “puzzle potato”, parodies Wikipedia’s globe puzzle logo, and it styles itself “the content-free encyclopedia”, which is a parody of Wikipedia’s slogan, “the free encyclopedia”.

Brahminpedia

Brahminpedia is a Brahmin Encyclopedia. It seeks to provide a counter-narrative to the usual Hinduphobia and Brahmin-bias that is inherent in post-modern multi-cultural Western and leftist-secular Indian discourse, as far as main-stream narratives on India and Hinduism are concerned.

  • Who are the Brahmins?
  • Was the Reservation Policy of Government of India a CIA conspiracy to force Brahmins to migrate to USA and turbo-charge American Science and Technology?
  • Why did Muslim invaders slaughter Brahmins?
  • Is it true that almost all great achievements in Science, Philosophy, Art and Culture in India since historic times are because of the 5% Brahmin population in India?

Brahminpedia claims that it will “try to answer all the above questions, as well as those questions which have not yet been articulated.

Conclusion

As is evident, there is a huge variation in rankings of websites ending with pedia. Not every pedia website is considered authoritative. However, what is evident is that Wikipedia is not necessarily everyone’s number one choice for all topics, given its left-liberal bias and lack of independence[2].

How long should a blog post be

How long should a blog post be is a question for which each person seems to give a different answer. No two answers seem to be the same.

Please share your answer by commenting, and also share link / links to some of your longer posts. Also if you have any other observations feel free to share and comment.

Coming back to the topic, I did some research on the Internet and found wildly varying answers. I am presenting some of the more authoritative one’s below.

#1 As per Quicksprout

Neil Patel is an authority on SEO and in this 2014 article called “How Long Should Each Blog Post Be? A Data Driven Answer“, he says the following.

  • Longer posts usually perform better on every level.
  • If you’re looking for numbers, a post that is above 1,500 words seems to be in the zone of ideal length.

#2 As per Thewritepractice

Joe Bunting in his piece “How Long Should Your Blog Post Be? A Writer’s Guide” says that there are 3 Perfect Lengths for Blog Posts.

  • For more comments, write short, discussion-based posts no longer than 275 words long.
  • For more social media shares, aim for medium length blog posts between 600 to 1,250 words.
  • For more traffic from Google, Write longer, heavily researched posts 2,450 words long.

#3 As per John Rampton for Forbes

As per this article in Forbes how long should my blog post be

  • 200 words post is perfectly acceptable if the blog has been created to sell a product of service.
  • 1000+ words or more post is good for SEO.
  • 2000+ words are more likely to get to top 10 of google.

What do you think? What should be the ideal length of a blog post?

Do share your comments below or drop me an email at benny.ya@gmail.com. Do not forget to share a link(s) to your more longer posts.

On Page SEO Factors Review

On Page SEO Factors

In this post I will talk about 3 advanced on page seo factors which will enable your website to rank better. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and refers to a set of techniques that allow your great website to stand out among thousands of good websites

In two of my previous posts, onpage seo factors  and  On Page SEO Optimization Techniques, I had discussed 10 points which you must keep in mind while writing your article. These 10 on page seo factors are as below.

  1. Identify Keyword.
  2. Ensure that post title has keyword.
  3. Ensure that post URL permalink has keyword.
  4. Try to place the keyword at the beginning of your URL permalink.
  5. Place the keyword within first 200 words of your article.
  6. Use the keyword in the last paragraph.
  7. Bold and underline keyword wherever appropriate.
  8. Try to maintain a keyword density of around 2% or less. Don not spam.
  9. Give an appropriate meta description.
  10. Use images wherever possible and do not forget to use alt tags.

On Page SEO Factors and User Experience

These 10 on page seo factors are the bare minimum that one has to address while writing a post. This will not only help your search engine rankings by helping Google and Bing to understand your content better, but also help your readers to know what your page is all about and thereby increase reader engagement.

Some people believe that SEO is all about search engines. That is but only one aspect of the story. A website with good SEO and great content will automatically be a favorite among search engines.

SEO is ultimately about user engagement and user experience. Technically SEO involves a set of techniques to rank higher so that more people are exposed to your site. Good SEO also ensures that people who have come to your site stay there and browse different articles. This in turn will have a positive impact on your ranking.

In this post I will discuss 3 more on page seo factors of slightly advanced nature.

1. Internal Linking

Internal Linking is one of the most important on page seo factors that most people seem to miss out.

An internal link is a hyperlink that points to a different page in the same website. Their purpose is to help a user navigate from page to page within the same domain in search of relevant and related information. Wikipedia is a great example of internal linking at work.

Internal Links have a number of benefits.

  • Relevant internal links helps users navigate your website and discover additional content.
  • Internal linking of posts and pages reduces your websites bounce rate, which in turn helps in improving website ranking.
  • It generates additional traffic as people surf different pages, remain engaged and may potentially also share these pages.
  • A proper internal linking strategy helps search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing to quickly and efficiently crawl and discover various pages easily. It also informs the search engines which are the more important pages.
  • Search Engines also discover the nature of content and keywords, if appropriate and relevant anchor texts are used.

If an awesome page with phenomenal content is unreachable to the search engine as below, it is non-existent as far as Google or Bing are concerned. Always remember that if a page is unreachable to search engines, it is most definitely unreachable to your users.

2. External Linking

An external links is one that points to an external domain. They are also known as outbound links.

External linking is among the more important on page seo factors. It tells the reader that whatever you have put up on your website is trustworthy and is backed by references, especially if the links are high quality links like Wikipedia or stanford.edu.

It also tells the search engines that you are a serious website and that you mean business when you write about any specific topic. Relevant external links will give search engines a very good view as to the intent and purpose of your post.

Adding outbound links to authority sites has a positive impact on your users readability experience which in turn improve page ranking.

As per this article from ShoutMeLoud, you should ideally link to the following type of sites.

  • Links to resource pages, which provide exhaustive coverage of a topic. Say Wikipedia.
  • Links to successful blogs with high PR.
  • Links to bloggers in same community or niche.

In my personal finance blog Mkerj, I prefer to create outbound links to authority sites like wikipedia and investopedia, along with detailed and data-backed blogs like freefincal , safalniveshak and stableinvestor.

3. Site Speed

Site speed is a critical ranking factor and for valid reasons. Out of the millions of websites all around, nobody is going to wait 10 seconds for your website to load.

The moment the see a slow loading page they will move on to the next available site.

You will lose not only your customers and readers but also page ranking. Here is what Google says in Webmaster Central Blog “Speeding up websites is important — not just to site owners, but to all Internet users.”

To check whether your website is optimized for load time you may use this tool called PageSpeed Insights  by Google.

Enter your website URL and hit Analyze. Once the analysis is done, you will be given a score out of 100 for your mobile as well as web version.

My desktop speed score is 62/100, which is on the lower side. Any score above 80 is considered good. Additionally, google will also help you identify potential cause for slower page load and possible solutions like compressing images or leveraging browser caching.

Generally a common sense rule of thumb in site speed is that any load more than 5 seconds is considered a no-no.

Therefore site speed is among the most important on page seo factors that one should focus on.

That’s it then. Hope you find the review of the above 3 on page seo factors useful.

On Page SEO Optimization Techniques

On Page SEO Optimization Techniques

In this article I will talk about some important on page seo optimization techniques that will help boost your page viewership and readership.

You may refer to this post on onpage seo factors where I have highlighted the importance of keyword and its proper usage in post title, permalink, and at the beginning of content.

To know more about SEO in general read this by beginner’s guide by Moz and this SEO starter guide from Google.

Below I discuss five important on page seo optimization techniques.

1. Keyword Density

Reinforcing something through repetition is something we all learn during our school days.

Same is also the case with web pages.

The user must be reminded time and again about what an article is all about.  This helps on page seo optimization in multiple ways.

  • As a content creator, it helps to keep you disciplined and prevents you from straying too far from the topic.
  • As a reader, it helps me stay focused on the topic or keyword.
  • It helps search engines like Google or Bing understand what your post is all about and present the same to users who are searching for relevant content.

Keyword density is the ratio of the number of occurrences of the keywords to total number of words in your post.

A keyword density of around 2% is considered good. Anything more looks spammy.

Something like “I am tlaking about Keyword, because Keyword is important and Keyword is significant blah blah” is definitely spammy and will be penalized by Google.

2. Meta Description

Meta description is the short description which is displayed below a website in the a search page. It will quickly tell the reader what your page is all about.

Try to make it as helpful as possible so that the readers’ are left in no doubt as to what you intend to talk about.

on page seo optimization meta description

For example, in the above screenshot of a search result of my post LIC e Term Plan Review, we can see an example of a meta description in action.

Therefore you must create a Meta Description tag which is a summary for your web page. It should be around 150 words for best results and should contain your keyword.

For example, my meta description for this page as below.

In this article I talk about 5 important on page seo optimization techniques that will help boost your page viewership and readership.

3. Use Images and proper Alt Tags

Images are a very powerful tool to convey a wealth of information. And people search images a lot.

Proper use of Alt Tags and image name is a good On Page SEO Optimization techniques.

For example, in my article on Rupee Cost Averaging in my finance website Mkerj:

  • Keyword is Rupee Cost Averaging.
  • Image name is also Rupee Cost Averaging.
  • Image Alt Tag is also Rupee Cost Averaging.

An image name like DSC_33 and no Alt description is pretty useless to your readers.

And if your readers don’t find it helpful neither will Yahoo or Yandex.

4. Bold and Underline Keywords wherever appropriate

This helps remind your user what the post is all about and prevents him from getting distracted.

Bolding and underlining also tells the Search Engine what your content is all about.

But don’t over do it.

You page should not look clumsy and awkward with too many bold keywords and underlined texts. If users leave, so will Google and Bing and Yahoo.

5. Use the keyword in the last paragraph

Using the keyword in the last paragraph is a good On Page SEO Optimization technique.

If the reader has reached so far, it means he has found your article engaging. So now it is time for you to conclude your article using your keyword, and to ask for user feedback and comments.

That’s it then. Hope you find these 5 techniques useful.

Onpage SEO Factors

Onpage SEO Factors

In this post, I will talk about 5 important onpage seo factors that have helped me improve my websites readability and relevance.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO essentially refers to a set of techniques that allow your website to stand out among a teeming mass of websites.

The bed rock of any SEO is obviously engaging content; something that the audience can relate to. But there are thousands of good websites with engaging content. It is only good SEO practices that will help your good website become a great website.

Below I have discussed 5 important but often overlooked onpage seo factors that will help your website stand out.

1. Identify  keyword

Proper keyword identification is one of the most important factors as it will help to tell you, your audience and search engines, what your content is all about.

For example, for my current article the  keyword is onpage seo factors.

2. Title should have  keyword

The title is the first thing your users would see. Having the  keyword within the title is a definite must if you want to engage your audience.

For example, if I want to write about “Onpage SEO Factors” but my title is “How to get more viewers for your blog” it will not helpful or relevant.

“How to get more visitors for your blog” is generic and includes On Page as well as Off page SEO factors.

The reader who did a google search and landed on your page knows exactly what he wants and it is likely that he will hang around longer if you give him what he desires.

3. URL Permalink should have  keyword

An ugly URL like mkerj.com/p=777 tells one nothing. It is extremely unhelpful.

But something like http://mkerj.com/atal-pension-yojana-scheme-review/  tells the audience that this article is a review of Atal Pension Yojana Scheme. They start taking you more seriously as they know that you mean business.onpage seo factors keyword in url permalink

It is because the reader wanted a review of Atal Pension Yojana Scheme that he landed on your page . And he expects nothing else but a review.

For my current article therefore, my permalink slug is /onpage-seo-factors/

4. Place Keyword at the beginning of your permalink

People have poor attention spans. In this age of twitter, every microsecond counts.

For example looking at the URL /looks-like-eye-weird-amazing-things.html  the user knows exactly what to expect, and below is how he probably would think when he sees the permalink.

  • Things that look like an eye? Sounds interesting.
  • Weird things. I love weird.
  • Amazing Things. I dig amazing.

But when one uses /weird-amazing-looks-like-eye, his initial visualization set is huge.

  • There are plenty of things which are weird.
  • There are plenty of things which are amazing.
  • Of those numerous things which are weird as well as amazing why should I even give two hoots about things which look like an eye?

5. Place keyword within first 200 words of your article

Now that you have nailed your header and permalink, the user needs to be convinced that you are giving them the goods.

Convince the reader by placing the keyword at the beginning of the article. Don’t write a long introduction and wait till than 700th word to introduce the keyword.

For example I have mentioned that I would talk about onpage seo factors within first 100 words. This leaves no doubt in the readers mind on what I want to talk about.

That’s it. Hope you enjoyed reading this article and are able to apply these points to your website. Do let me know how they impact your website’s readability and relevance.
