As parents, we always look out for the best available options and choices for our child. As per World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, childhood stunting was “a great unrecognised disaster”, adding that countries which failed to invest in early child development would be left behind in an increasingly complex, digital world [3].

Another reason for lagging behind in terms of weight and height could be because of “fussy eating, illness or for several other possible reasons. Growth lost in early childhood requires specialised nutrition in order to catch up, but parents must make sure that adequate nutrition is provided so that catch up growth happens.”[2]

Lost growth leads to psychological and confidence issues in a child, and also to a lot of anxiety for parents. Almost 30% of the Sumerians’ medical treatments included honey. (7)

Honey is a natural cough remedy. (4) Honey’s scientific super powers contribute to its vastly touted health benefits for the whole body. Honey acts like a natural vaccine. (1) A tablespoon of raw honey contains 64 calories, is fat-free, cholesterol-free, and sodium-free, says the National Honey Board. (2) Honey is believed to be as effective as the common cough suppressant ingredient dextromethorphan. It can be used in treating upper respiratory tract infections. Honey is a natural antibiotic that can act both internally and externally. Honey has been utilized for its medicinal properties for over 2,000 years and continues its legacy as a multipurpose health aid. (1)

The United States National Honey Board recommends consumption of honey because it contains many vitamins and minerals in small amounts. A list of these include: niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. (7)

In recent times I have been seeing a lot of coverage on mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. So I did some research to understand the disease, its cause and treatment. In this post I will talk about all that and on mesothelioma survival rates based on different studies.

What is Mesothelioma ?

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, most commonly caused by exposure to asbestos. It develops from the protective lining that covers many of the internal organs of the body (mesothelium). In the United States, asbestos is considered the major cause of malignant mesothelioma. Mesothelioma causes pleural effusion (fluid between the lung and the chest wall) which causes shortness of breath, fatigue and cough. Others symptoms are unexplained weight loss and chest wall pain. Whom does it affect?

Mesothelioma mostly affects people who have worked in mines where the probability of inhaling or injesting asbestos fiber is very high. It also affects people who wash clothes of people exposed to asbestos.


Currently there is no known cure for mesothelioma. However treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

Mesothelioma Survival Rates

Below I present statistics on mesothelioma survival rates as per various resources.

Mesothelioma is a very serious disease which has a long latency period. By the time it is diagnosed it may already be too late as the disease is often in an advanced stage. It is very hard to treat.

Please note that survival rates depend on a number of factors like cancer type, stage, age, gender and race. Every case is different, however that being said the prognosis is usually grim. On a positive note, scientists are working hard to come up with effective ways to tackle this disease. Overall survival raes have been steadily improving due to new innvoations in treatment options. The statistics presented below are for mostly for US patients. (3), (4), (5), (6), (7)

1. Survival Rates for Mesothelioma as per

  • Relative 5-year survival rate for mesothelioma is between 5% and 10%.  (7)
  • Median Survival times of patients with pleural mesothelioma who were treated with surgery between 1995 and 2009
    • Stage 1 – 21 months
    • Stage 2 – 19 months
    • Stage 3 – 16 months
    • Stage 4 – 12 months

2. Mesothelioma Survival Rates after diagnosis as per

  • 40% live upto 1 year.
  • 20% live upto 2 year.
  • 8% live upto 3 year (3)

Mesothelioma life expectancy after diagnosis is between 8 to 14 months. The relative five-year survival rate for mesothelioma 10 percent. (4)

4. Mesothelioma Survival Rates after diagnosis as per

  • 1 year survival rate for pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma patients is 40%.
  • 2 year survival rates for pleural patients is 11%.
  • 2 year survival rates for peritoneal patients are 35%.
  • At age 65 or older, survival rates of mesothelioma patients are 5 times better at stage 1 than at stage 4.
  • 5-year survival rate of men is 6.5 percent while for women it is 15.4 percent rate. (5)

5. Survival Rates for Mesothelioma as per

  • An average patient lives between 4 and 11 months after diagnosis.
  • 40% of patients live longer than 1 year and about 10% survive more than 5 years. (6)

Mesothelioma is a terrible disease with a grim prognosis. However research and innovation has lead to a tremendous improvement in treatment options in recent times and mesothelioma survival rates have increased over the last 40 years.

Here is what has to say:
Many patients have a survival time different than survival rates initially indicate, sometimes regardless of the treatment received. With this in mind, patients should take survival rate statistics with a grain of salt and not be discouraged.

There are documented cases of people who have beaten the odds and survived and lived for 10 years (4). One should not lose hope.

As per this study, The neuropharmacology of L-theanine(N-ethyl-L-glutamine): a possible neuroprotective and cognitive enhancing agent: L-theanine has been historically reported as a relaxing agent …  Behavioural studies in animals suggest improvement in learning and memory.

3. Green Tea Memory Benefits from Caffeine and L-Theanine

Studies have shown that Caffeine and L-Theanine combination which naturally occurs in green tea has a synergistic effect and positively impact brain function.

As per this study, The effects of l-theanine, caffeine and their combination on cognition and mood,
In addition to improving RVIP accuracy and ‘mental fatigue’ ratings, the combination also led to faster simple reaction time, faster numeric working memory reaction time and improved sentence verification accuracy. ‘Headache’ and ‘tired’ ratings were reduced and ‘alert’ ratings increased.

4. Green Tea Memory Benefits from epigallocatechin-3-gallate

As per this study, Green tea extract enhances parieto-frontal connectivity during working memory processing, drinking green tea increases connectivity between “right superior parietal lobule and the frontal cortex of the brain. As per one of the researchers, “Our findings suggest that green tea might increase the short-term synaptic plasticity of the brain”. Source.

In neuroscience, synaptic plasticity is the ability of synapses to strengthen or weaken over time, in response to increases or decreases in their activity. Synaptic plasticity is an important driver of learning and memory.

Please note that the researchers used green tea extract. The active ingredient that’s most likely responsible for the effects is epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). Source.

In this post I will talk about the health benefits of tea.

As a true-blue Bengali I have been drinking tea my entire life. Statistics show that globally tea is the second most popular beverage after water. It holds true for me also.

In fact I am so enthusiastic about tea that I also own shares in tea companies, and tea as a sector is the largest part of my stock portfolio. Anyway I digress.

Good tea not only tastes great, but also has a number of health benefits. A majority of tea’s health properties can be attributed to polyphenols (an antioxidant) and phytochemicals. Some of these health benefits of tea are quite expected and some of them are quite surprising.

1. Tea Reduces Cholesterol and Risk of Heart Attacks

According to a meta-study conducted by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, “Green tea intake lowers fasting serum total and LDL cholesterol in adults”.

LDL Cholesterol is bad cholesterol. LDL collects in blood vessels and causes blockages of atherosclerosis which might eventually lead to a heart attack.

As per a 5 year study conducted in Netherlands, people who drank at least 2 to 3 cups of black tea daily had a 70% lower risk of heart attack compared to non-tea drinkers.

Researchers at Kings College London, based on a survey of published studies, found that drinking three to four cups of tea a day can cut the chances of having a heart attack. Source.

2. Tea Reduces Risk of Strokes

According a 2009 meta-study, regardless of their country of origin, individuals consuming ≥3 cups of tea per day had a 21% lower risk of stroke than those consuming <1 cup per day.

3. Tea Reduces Cortisol Levels

Cortisol is a stress hormone that adds to belly fat and makes skin age quicker. Tea helps in reducing cortisol levels and thereby reduces stress.

4. Tea Improves Memory

Tea contains caffeine and an amino acid known as L-Theanine. A study has shown that these two chemicals together, improve memory and increase focus and concentration.

5. Tea Prevents Blindness

According to a study published in Experimental Eye Research, the anti-oxidant property of green and black tea, has the potential to retard the progression of eye lens cataract.

6. Tea improves dental health

Tea contains fluoride and tannins that prevent plaques and betters dental health.

7. Tea increases metabolism and helps maintain weight

Green tea has been shown to increase metabolic rates which helps in burning extra calories. Studies have shown that regular tea drinkers have “lower body mass indexes (BMIs) and waist-to-hip ratios, along with less body fat, compared with non-tea drinkers.”

In this post I will talk about the health benefits of walking.

There are numerous physical activities that one can undertake for better health, but among them regular walking is the most effective and the easiest. In my previous article, I had talked about why you should walk and had discussed the different benefits of walking in terms of health, mental, social, environmental and financial factors.

In this post I will focus specifically on the health benefits of regular brisk walking.

Regular means everyday, without fail.

Physical fitness experts and doctors generally recommend at least 30 minutes of brisk walk per day or 150 minutes per week. Again there are many health advocacy groups who have recommend a daily 10,000 steps walking goal.

Whatever be the quantum, the keyword is daily. Walking for 5 days for 1 hour and then a 5 day break will definitely not be as effective as 30 minutes of daily walk for 10 days.

10 Health Benefits of Walking

  1. Regular Walking reduces bad cholesterol and increases the levels of good cholesterol. Studies have shown that regular walking leads to lower risk of heart diseases and stroke and increased heart and lung fitness. One study has show that women who walked at a brisk pace had a lower chance of having a stroke than those who didn’t walk. Source.
  2. Daily Walking helps to improve blood pressure. One can walk continuously for 30 minutes or engage in short bouts totaling 30 minutes. A study has shown that both are equally effective in reducing systolic blood pressure.
  3. Daily Walking helps to improve blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that daily walking reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes.
  4. Walking helps to maintain body weight. Studies have shown that walking just after a meal is more effective for weight loss than waiting 1 hour after eating before walking.
  5. You can reduce your risk of obesity if you walk regularly. While walking will not help one to shed a lot of weight or develop six pack abs, studies have shown that regular walking helps people lose some body fat.
  6. Walking daily strengthens bones and joints and prevents the onset of diseases like arthritis and osteoporosis. This also leads to improved balance. One study has shown that even in older adults with osteoarthritis, walking along with weight lifting helps to improve balance.
  7. Walking outside in daylight provides Vitamin D to your body. Vitamin D promotes healthy bones by facilitating the absorption of calcium. Source.
  8. Walking can help strengthen legs and arm muscles and this has a direct impact of all associated muscles and joints like thighs, calves, hamstrings, shoulders and so on. This will significantly reduce joint and muscular stiffness and pain.
  9. Studies have shown that daily walking reduces the risk of breast and colon cancer. Here are two studies. Results of this study supports an inverse association between physical activity and postmenopausal breast cancer. This study indicates that brisk walking after diagnosis may inhibit or delay prostate cancer progression among men diagnosed with clinically localized prostate cancer.
  10. Finally you should walk regularly if you want to live longer. As per a study, adding 150 minutes of brisk walking to your daily routine can increase your life span by up to 3 years.
