17 Wonderful Benefits of Organic Tea

Benefits of Organic Tea

In this article I will talk about 17 wonderful benefits of organic tea in terms of health, environment, biodiversity and economic benefits.

As we are all aware, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world next to water. An Indian drinks at least 2 cups of tea per day on an average, and in US approximately 4 in 5 people consume tea. Tea has a lot of health benefits which accrue over a long period of time. Since tea is so widely consumed we should ensure that the positive benefits of tea remain and they are not cancelled out because of other factors. This is where organic tea plays a very important role, and in the next few paragraphs I will explain why organic tea is better.

Before we get started I would like to highlight that organic tea is popular more because of what it does not contain than rather  for what it does – namely synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. And this in itself has a huge effect on your health and the health of your environment. I have earlier touched upon the general benefits of organic produce.

Benefits of Organic Tea

  1. Herbicides have been shown to increase the risk of certain cancers or to cause Parkinson’s disease. Organic tea is free of herbicides.
  2. Synthetic pesticides are a significant health risk and may cause birth defects, nervous system damage, hormone disruptions, respiratory disorders and various types of cancers. Pesticides are not used when growing organic tea.
  3. Pesticides are a major cause of water pollution.
  4. Pesticides have been shown to reduce biodiversity, destroy bird habitats and threaten endangered species. As per newspaper reports in West Bengal at least 10 leopards and several elephants died between 1999 and 2001 due to leakage of pesticides from tea gardens. Organic tea farming directly contributes to preventing such environmental hazards.
  5. Organic tea agriculture sustains the health of soils, as strong chemicals are not used. In fact studies have shown mechanized farming leading to deterioration a soil quality as well as desertification in the worst case.
  6. Heavy use of pesticides and fertilizers in conventional tea farming depletes the land and makes it less arable. Organic tea cultivation uses a number of techniques to ensure that this does not happen.
    • Cow dung is used as fertilizer.
    • Cow urine is used as an insect repellent.
    • Neem  trees are planted for shade.
    • Weeding is done manually to avoid herbicides.
  7. Depending on the pest infestation, many tea farmers in conventional spray their plants many times in a year. Most of the times untrained people, women and even children spray these toxic chemicals without being protected by recommended safety gear such as masks, gloves, rubber boots, and polythene aprons. Organic tea farming as explained above avoids all these and is thus better for the health of tea plantation workers.
  8. In Asia, conventionally grown tea is one of the most environmentally damaging crops. Because they are grown at higher levels, all the chemicals run down the mountains and wreak havoc on fields, rivers, ponds, rivers and forests below. Organic tea cultivation ensures that such things do not happen.
  9. Organic tea farming does not damage water sources as no artificial chemicals are used.
  10. Synthetic fertilizers have been shown to play a significant role in contaminating the environment. Organic tea is grown without using synthetic fertilizers.
  11. Another negative impact of synthetic fertilizer is that most of the nitrogen in the fertilizers is unused and seeps into waterways where it creates algae blooms, which absorb oxygen from the water and suffocate fish and other aquatic life. Organic tea farming ensures that aquatic life is not impacted.
  12. The nitrogen also seeps into ground-water thereby causing massive contamination. Tea grown organically does not have this kind of negative impact on ground water.
  13. Organic tea tastes better. China and India, the major tea producers have tried to maintain natural harmony in tea gardens resulting in unique tea flavors – however the onset of standardized mechanical farming negatively affected this uniqueness.
  14. The use of fertilizers hardens the soil and makes it difficult to grow crops without using stringer chemicals. This leads to a vicious cycle which damages the tea plant, the environment and the local Eco-system. Organic tea has no such detrimental effect on its key players.
  15. In many places in China and in some in India, tea gardens are a family business and tea garden owners prefer to use traditional organic farming techniques and use natural materials. Organic Tea typically helps support these small farmers and small farms.
  16. Holistic benefits of organic tea farming include improved overall health of families and communities.
  17. Better overall health because of consumption of organic tea, ensures lower medical costs and higher prosperity.

To conclude, it is obvious that organic tea is far superior to conventional tea because of its benefits across five fronts – your health, the health of tea plantation workers, health of wild-life and other creatures, environmental preservation and economic prosperity. Historically a country like India has always believed that as humans we must respect and revere nature because we are an integral part of it. And keeping this philosophy in mind, our farming methods have always been organic and natural.

Unfortunately, some 50 years back to embrace “modern farming techniques” Indian farmers were incentivized to follow Western agricultural practices and methods of mono-cropping, using strong artificial synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. Today we can see the harm it has caused – underground water levels are depleted, water table is contaminated with chemicals from these pesticides, bugs have been more resistant and require stronger chemicals, soil quality has deteriorated and many previously green places have become arid and desert-like.

However we have now realized our mistakes and hopefully we will move to modernized “traditional” agriculture rather than Westernized agriculture, and see how of the damage can be undone. Organic tea cultivation is fast picking up pace and some of the positive changes are already visible in some places and communities.

17 Reasons why Organic Milk is Awesome

17 Reasons why Organic Milk is Awesome

In this post I will share with you 17 reasons why Organic Milk is awesome in terms of health benefits, environmental impact and economic benefits.

Milk and milk products are one of the most important part of our diets especially in a country like India India where cows are considered divine. An average Indian will consume either milk or butter, ghee, curd, butter-milk or lassi. Milk has a lot of benefit like bone and teeth development and overall healthy growth. Organic milk retains all these benefits, and on top of that has some additional benefits. (1)

Why is Organic Milk great?

  1. Modern dairies use a number of chemicals during milk production which organic milk will not have.
  2. The fodder fed to the cows would have been cultivated using pesticides and fertilizers, which will have a negative impact on the quality of the milk produced. Organic milk is free from such chemical contamination.
  3. Often cows in conventional dairy farms are administered antibiotics and other artificial chemicals, and this has a harmful effect on the milk. In  organic farms, cows are not administered such strong antibiotics and hence organic milk in not subject to such harmful reactions.
  4. Organic milk has 70% more Omega 3 Fatty acids as compared to regular milk, and hence is more effective than regular milk for healthy growth.
  5. Omega 3 has been shown to protect against heart disease, cancer and arthritis, and therefore organic milk is more effective than regular milk in combating these diseases. (1)
  6. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids may reduce or delay onset of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and therefore organic milk is a very good option. (2)
  7. Organic milk has a higher ratio of omega 3 to omega 6, and this balance promotes good heart health and cardiovascular conditions. Organic milk contains 25% less omega-6 fats and 62% more omega-3 fats than conventional milk.(3)
  8. Organic milk has 5x to 6x more Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than regular milk. CLA causes muscle growth and increases immunity to disease. (1)
  9. Organic milk can also indirectly lead to weight-control or weight-loss on account of CLA which reduces abdominal fat and cholesterol and increases the body’s metabolic rate. (1)
  10. Organic milk has 2x more lutein, an antioxidant that prevents numerous eye diseases. (1)
  11. Organic milk has 2x more zeaxanthin, an antioxidant that is very helpful in preventing diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. (1)
  12. Compared to regular milk, organic milk is more effective in combating signs of aging because of higher amount of Vitamin E present.
  13. Organic milk is more effective in increasing resistance to infections, good bone growth and tooth development, compared to regular milk because of 75% more beta carotene.
  14. Many studies have shown that full-fat organic dairy products more protective against diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes as well as weight gain. (4)
  15. Organic raw milks is more beneficial than organic processed milk as it has healthy bacteria that are good for gastrointestinal tract. (3)
  16. Organic raw milk has plentiful vitamins (, B, C, D, E, and K) in highly bio-available forms, and a very balanced blend of minerals (calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron). (3)
  17. European research has shown that if infants and mothers eat organic dairy produce, the children are 36 per cent less likely to develop eczema. (5)

As is evident there are numerous benefits of organic milk over regular milk of which I have listed only a few. It is common sense that milk that is obtained from cows which grow up in a natural environment would be better than milk from cows held in captivity in large mechanized dairies.

That’s what we Indians consider cows divine and ensure that whatever happens, cows are not ill-treated. The West is now slowly realizing that cows which are reared in organic farms are healthier than antibiotics and steroid-fed animal farms cattle typical of the West.

Cow is go-mata, our mother, and as long as she is allowed to thrive naturally and in peace she will offer us her blessings in the form of superior quality milk.

17 Amazing Facts about Organic Tomatoes

17 Amazing Facts about Organic Tomatoes

In this post I will share with you 17 Amazing Facts about Organic Tomatoes. Organic tomatoes are grown naturally using fertilization and pest management techniques that do not use artificial or synthetic chemicals. They are grown and sold locally. (3)

For many millennia in India we have been growing nutritious food in healthy soil with no artificial pesticides and chemicals. Yet in order to embrace modernity, India started introducing large scale mechanized farming, artificial fertilizers, synthetic pesticides and chemicals since the 1950’s! We were simply copying what the American’s were doing.

The result has been that farm productivity has actually come down and farm produce has become less healthy and in fact harmful because of heavier concentration of these strong chemicals. In fact processed fruits and vegetables have lower nutritional value than their fresh commodities because of the loss of vitamin C during processing. (7) Now the world is moving back to organic, and Indian farming is once again going back to its organic roots.

Facts about Organic Tomatoes

Tomato is actually a fruit and not a vegetable, and research has show that it contains a number of important nutrients. (4)

  1. Tomatoes are one of the highest pesticide sprayed vegetables in the world. Hence organic tomatoes are automatically better because they have no artificial pesticides. (9)
  2. Organic fruits in general contain 40% more antioxidants and have higher levels of beneficial minerals. (4)
  3. Organic tomatoes are 40% smaller than conventionally grown tomatoes, yet they contain 57% more Vitamin C. (1)
  4. Organic tomatoes have 2x more phenolic compounds such as flavonids which help the body help the body fight oxidative stress – a form of chemical damage linked to chronic conditions such as heart disease, cancer and dementia. (1)
  5. A tomato flavonoid called lycopene, found in higher concentration in orrganic tomatoes, is known to slow tumor growth.  (1)
  6. In fact lycopene found in organic tomatoes in abundance has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of stroke (5).
  7. Lycopene has also been shown to reduce the risk of prostrate cancer. (1) (6)
  8. When organic tomatoes are cooked the bio-availability of lycopene actually increases rather than decreases as in other raw foods, and hence cooked organic tomatoes are actually more nutritious and healthier. (4)
  9. Overall antioxidant levels actually increase by 30% when organic tomatoes are cooked. (7)
  10. Organic tomatoes have double the concentration of two specific types of flavonoids – quercetin and kaempferol – which are known to have potent antioxidant properties. (2)
  11. Since organic farming ensures that no harmful chemicals were used, organic tomatoes ensure that the amount of toxic residues you end up consuming is significantly, which is a major benefit in and of itself. (4)
  12. Organic tomatoes are GMO free and hence contains no unnatural or artificial genetic modifications. (8)
  13. Since organic tomatoes are sourced locally, the money stays within the community.
  14. The organic farmer stands to gain monetarily because he can sell his tomatoes directly to the market without needing middle-men or multiple aggregators.
  15. There is practically no long-distance transportation of organic tomatoes, hence there is also no carbon emission.
  16. Organic farming ensures that the tomato plants stay healthy and natural, and this ensures protection of environment.
  17. Holistic benefits of organic tomatoes consumption include improved overall health of families and communities and better overall health because of use of organic produce, ensures lower medical costs and higher prosperity.

As is obvious there are numerous benefits of organic tomatoes of which I have listed only a few. Common sense dictates that fruits and vegetables which are natural should be better. That’s what we Indians had been producing tomatoes since ancient times and were managing fine, till suddenly against reason it became fashionable to move towards mechanized farming with use of artificial chemicals. After 60 years of mechanized farming and famines and devastation and drought, the world is realizing the old adage “Old is Gold” and organic tomatoes are once again becoming popular.

Sprouting – 3 Benefits

prouting and its 3 Benefits

Sprouting is the process whereby seeds are germinated so that they may be cooked or eaten in raw form. Sprouting is a very common practice in Eastern Asian cuisine as well as in Indian sub-continent. Sprouts can be produced at home as well as industrially.

Sprouting involves soaking grains, seeds, nuts, or legumes so that they start germinating and start producing pod-like protrusions.

Sprouting provides a number if health and nutritional benefits.

Anti-nutrient Lectins and how Sprouting Helps

Anti-nutrients make nutrients less effective.

Lectins are a category of proteins that easily bind to cell membranes, given their sticky and glue-like nature. They are abundant in plants, especially in raw legumes, grains, tomato, potato, eggplant and pepper. They are also present in specific vegetables as well as in milk products. In the plant world, lectins help the plant against fungus and insects attacks.

However in humans, lectins attach to healthy intestinal cells and cause inflammation. Also known as gut permeability, this is the root cause of many ailments.

Lectins being highly durable remain unaffected by high temperatures and by bodily enzymes and digestive juices.

Sprouting is the one of best ways to remove the toxic effect of lectins. Soaking and cooking is another method to mitigate the toxicity of lectins.

Lectins the Anti-Nutrient
All About Lectins

Sprouting also helps in the reduction of other anti-nutrients like phytates, polyphenols like tannin, oxalate which decreases calcium absorption and enzyme inhibitors like trypsin.

Nutritional Benefits of Sprouting

  • Sprouts contain digestive enzyme and are high on certain antioxidants. Antioxidants such as sulphoraphanes reduce insulin resistance and in people with Type-2 diabetes assist in blood-sugar control.
  • Sprouts contain high levels of dietary fiber, vitamin B Complex, digestive enzymes and proteins.
  • Sprouting increases the bioavailability of calcium, zinc and iron.
  • Sprouting prevents the ill-effects of enzyme inhibitors and the sugars producing intestinal gas.
  • Sprouting neutralizes carcinogens found in grains.

All about Sprouting

Use of Sprouting in Malting Process

Sprouting is also applied on a large scale to barley as a part of the malting process.

Malt is the basic ingredient used to make beer. Malt is barley that has been sprouted such that enzymes produced convert its starchy to sugar.

Making malt needs barley and water only. A three-step process, steeping, germinating and drying, can transform it to beer.

The grains germinated by soaking in water, and are then prevented from germinating further by using hot air.
