How green tea helps in weight loss

In a previous post “Is organic green tea good for weight loss?”, I had talked in brief about the four ways in which organic green tea helps in weight loss.

  1. Green Tea helps to decrease skin fat (triglyceride)
  2. Green Tea helps in controlling visceral fat (belly fat)
  3. Green Tea aids in stimulating metabolism (EGCG and caffeine)
  4. Green Tea along with exercise helps in weight loss

Then I had discussed in detail the first way – how green tea helps to decrease skin fat (triglyceride).

In this second part, I shall talk about how Green Tea helps in controlling visceral fat (belly fat) and how green tea helps stimulate metabolism (EGCG and caffeine).

Green Tea Helps in reducing Belly Fat

Visceral fat also known as belly fat builds up around the organs. It is harmful as it causes inflammation and insulin resistance which might ultimately result in heart disease and diabetes. Drinking green tea regularly directly combats visceral fat, which not only leads to some weight loss but also lower risk of lifestyle diseases.

Green Tea helps in improving metabolism (EGCG and caffeine)


Caffeine is a stimulant that has been shown to help burn fat (thermogenesis) in some studies and in appetite suppression. Thus caffeine may slightly increase weight loss and control weight gain.

Caffeine is generally safe when used in controlled manner (400 mg or less) by healthy adults. However, too much caffeine leads to a wide range of unpleasant symptoms including nervousness, irritability, insomnia, nausea and high blood pressure.

A cup of green tea contains enough caffeine (24-40 mg) to have a mild impact of weight loss.


Phytochemicals are compounds in plants which help them in combating diseases. Green tea contains a phytochemical of type polyphenol (an antioxidant) called epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or EGCG for short.

A hormone called norepinephrine is used by the central nervous system to facilitate break down of fat. More norepinephrine leads to more fats getting broken down. EGCG prevents an enzyme that destroys norepinephrine, thereby preventing fat buildup.

When fat is burnt, it is moved into the bloodstream after being broken down in the fat cell and becomes available for use as energy.
