17 Reasons why Organic Milk is Awesome

17 Reasons why Organic Milk is Awesome

In this post I will share with you 17 reasons why Organic Milk is awesome in terms of health benefits, environmental impact and economic benefits.

Milk and milk products are one of the most important part of our diets especially in a country like India India where cows are considered divine. An average Indian will consume either milk or butter, ghee, curd, butter-milk or lassi. Milk has a lot of benefit like bone and teeth development and overall healthy growth. Organic milk retains all these benefits, and on top of that has some additional benefits. (1)

Why is Organic Milk great?

  1. Modern dairies use a number of chemicals during milk production which organic milk will not have.
  2. The fodder fed to the cows would have been cultivated using pesticides and fertilizers, which will have a negative impact on the quality of the milk produced. Organic milk is free from such chemical contamination.
  3. Often cows in conventional dairy farms are administered antibiotics and other artificial chemicals, and this has a harmful effect on the milk. In  organic farms, cows are not administered such strong antibiotics and hence organic milk in not subject to such harmful reactions.
  4. Organic milk has 70% more Omega 3 Fatty acids as compared to regular milk, and hence is more effective than regular milk for healthy growth.
  5. Omega 3 has been shown to protect against heart disease, cancer and arthritis, and therefore organic milk is more effective than regular milk in combating these diseases. (1)
  6. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids may reduce or delay onset of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and therefore organic milk is a very good option. (2)
  7. Organic milk has a higher ratio of omega 3 to omega 6, and this balance promotes good heart health and cardiovascular conditions. Organic milk contains 25% less omega-6 fats and 62% more omega-3 fats than conventional milk.(3)
  8. Organic milk has 5x to 6x more Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than regular milk. CLA causes muscle growth and increases immunity to disease. (1)
  9. Organic milk can also indirectly lead to weight-control or weight-loss on account of CLA which reduces abdominal fat and cholesterol and increases the body’s metabolic rate. (1)
  10. Organic milk has 2x more lutein, an antioxidant that prevents numerous eye diseases. (1)
  11. Organic milk has 2x more zeaxanthin, an antioxidant that is very helpful in preventing diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. (1)
  12. Compared to regular milk, organic milk is more effective in combating signs of aging because of higher amount of Vitamin E present.
  13. Organic milk is more effective in increasing resistance to infections, good bone growth and tooth development, compared to regular milk because of 75% more beta carotene.
  14. Many studies have shown that full-fat organic dairy products more protective against diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes as well as weight gain. (4)
  15. Organic raw milks is more beneficial than organic processed milk as it has healthy bacteria that are good for gastrointestinal tract. (3)
  16. Organic raw milk has plentiful vitamins (, B, C, D, E, and K) in highly bio-available forms, and a very balanced blend of minerals (calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron). (3)
  17. European research has shown that if infants and mothers eat organic dairy produce, the children are 36 per cent less likely to develop eczema. (5)

Conclusion

As is evident there are numerous benefits of organic milk over regular milk of which I have listed only a few. It is common sense that milk that is obtained from cows which grow up in a natural environment would be better than milk from cows held in captivity in large mechanized dairies.

That’s what we Indians consider cows divine and ensure that whatever happens, cows are not ill-treated. The West is now slowly realizing that cows which are reared in organic farms are healthier than antibiotics and steroid-fed animal farms cattle typical of the West.

Cow is go-mata, our mother, and as long as she is allowed to thrive naturally and in peace she will offer us her blessings in the form of superior quality milk.

17 Amazing Facts about Organic Tomatoes

17 Amazing Facts about Organic Tomatoes

In this post I will share with you 17 Amazing Facts about Organic Tomatoes. Organic tomatoes are grown naturally using fertilization and pest management techniques that do not use artificial or synthetic chemicals. They are grown and sold locally. (3)

For many millennia in India we have been growing nutritious food in healthy soil with no artificial pesticides and chemicals. Yet in order to embrace modernity, India started introducing large scale mechanized farming, artificial fertilizers, synthetic pesticides and chemicals since the 1950’s! We were simply copying what the American’s were doing.

The result has been that farm productivity has actually come down and farm produce has become less healthy and in fact harmful because of heavier concentration of these strong chemicals. In fact processed fruits and vegetables have lower nutritional value than their fresh commodities because of the loss of vitamin C during processing. (7) Now the world is moving back to organic, and Indian farming is once again going back to its organic roots.

Facts about Organic Tomatoes

Tomato is actually a fruit and not a vegetable, and research has show that it contains a number of important nutrients. (4)

  1. Tomatoes are one of the highest pesticide sprayed vegetables in the world. Hence organic tomatoes are automatically better because they have no artificial pesticides. (9)
  2. Organic fruits in general contain 40% more antioxidants and have higher levels of beneficial minerals. (4)
  3. Organic tomatoes are 40% smaller than conventionally grown tomatoes, yet they contain 57% more Vitamin C. (1)
  4. Organic tomatoes have 2x more phenolic compounds such as flavonids which help the body help the body fight oxidative stress – a form of chemical damage linked to chronic conditions such as heart disease, cancer and dementia. (1)
  5. A tomato flavonoid called lycopene, found in higher concentration in orrganic tomatoes, is known to slow tumor growth.  (1)
  6. In fact lycopene found in organic tomatoes in abundance has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of stroke (5).
  7. Lycopene has also been shown to reduce the risk of prostrate cancer. (1) (6)
  8. When organic tomatoes are cooked the bio-availability of lycopene actually increases rather than decreases as in other raw foods, and hence cooked organic tomatoes are actually more nutritious and healthier. (4)
  9. Overall antioxidant levels actually increase by 30% when organic tomatoes are cooked. (7)
  10. Organic tomatoes have double the concentration of two specific types of flavonoids – quercetin and kaempferol – which are known to have potent antioxidant properties. (2)
  11. Since organic farming ensures that no harmful chemicals were used, organic tomatoes ensure that the amount of toxic residues you end up consuming is significantly, which is a major benefit in and of itself. (4)
  12. Organic tomatoes are GMO free and hence contains no unnatural or artificial genetic modifications. (8)
  13. Since organic tomatoes are sourced locally, the money stays within the community.
  14. The organic farmer stands to gain monetarily because he can sell his tomatoes directly to the market without needing middle-men or multiple aggregators.
  15. There is practically no long-distance transportation of organic tomatoes, hence there is also no carbon emission.
  16. Organic farming ensures that the tomato plants stay healthy and natural, and this ensures protection of environment.
  17. Holistic benefits of organic tomatoes consumption include improved overall health of families and communities and better overall health because of use of organic produce, ensures lower medical costs and higher prosperity.

Conclusion

As is obvious there are numerous benefits of organic tomatoes of which I have listed only a few. Common sense dictates that fruits and vegetables which are natural should be better. That’s what we Indians had been producing tomatoes since ancient times and were managing fine, till suddenly against reason it became fashionable to move towards mechanized farming with use of artificial chemicals. After 60 years of mechanized farming and famines and devastation and drought, the world is realizing the old adage “Old is Gold” and organic tomatoes are once again becoming popular.

Organic Farming Principles and Practices

In this article, I will talk about the key organic farming principles and practices you should know about.

Why on earth do I need to know about organic farming?, you may ask.

Because organic farming produces organic food. And organic food is good for health. Very good. Amazingly good.

Organic food is slowly becoming an important part of our daily lives. People are realizing the health benefits and are willing to pay extra an extra premium for good health.

If you have not switched to organic food yet, it is high time you did. But before you do it is important to understand why is organic food so wonderful. To do that, we need to understand organic farming.

What is Organic Farming?

Organic farming is an agricultural system that produces wholesome natural food, while at the same time sustaining the health of soils, ecosystems and people.

Techniques such as natural pest control, crop rotation, green manure and compost are an important part of organic agriculture.

Organic farming methods are built on the principles of health, sustainability and safety. Such farming methods use traditional farming practices along with latest scientific research.

At a broader level, organic agriculture not only includes the actual farming process but also the whole supply chain including processing, packaging, marketing and distribution of organic food.

How is organic farming different from conventional farming?

How is organic farming different from conventional farming

Conventional farming, especially in first world countries like US, Western Europe and Australia  is heavily mechanized and produces a lot of pollution.

Conventional farming use synthetic insecticides and fertilizers, many of which have long term harmful effects on humans.

High use of chemicals destroys the soil and the land becomes unusable. These chemicals also affect the underground water supply by polluting them.

All these factors put together have a big impact on our lives, either directly or indirectly. Organic farming tries to address all these issues.

The key elements of farming are soil, plant, animal, human and nature. Organic farming tries to produce good food and at the same time better the health of all these elements.

Respect for environment is the key difference between organic farming and conventional farming.

Five Features of organic farming are as follows.

  1. Organic agriculture is intended to produce food of optimum nutritional value. To do this it uses local resources and follows ecological cycles. Read more.
  2.  Organic farming tries to preserve the natural fertility of soil. It relies on natural techniques like green manure and composting to replenish soil nutrients. Synthetic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are not used.
  3. Organic farmers use local animals and plants to ensure disease resistance and adaptability to local conditions. They promote animal health and welfare by giving the animals living conditions that meet their basic natural requirements.
  4. Organic agriculture promotes the use energy and natural resources in a responsible manner. It discourages the use of non-renewable resources including fossil fuels.
  5. It strictly monitors water quality and maintains regional ecological balance along with maintenance of biodiversity.

Organic Farming Principles

The International Federation of Organic Agriculture has defined four principles of organic farming. Read more.Principles of Organic Farming
  1. The Principle of Health – The key elements of farming are soil, plant, animal and human. Organic farming is meant to better the health of all these elements at the same time.
  2. The Principle of Ecology – Organic agriculture should function in sync with the cycle of nature.
  3. The Principle of Fairness – Fair use should be made of natural resources in terms of social justice and ecological impact.
  4. The Principle of Care – Careful monitoring of all the elements of farming will ensure protection of our environment.

Conclusion

Organic farming is a sustainable system intended to better the health of the environment, and all creatures that form part of the ecosystem. It fits the cycle of nature adapted to local conditions and attempts to maintain ecological balance and biodiversity by reducing waste, reuse, efficient material management, energy reduction and conservation of resources.

If you care about your health and the health of your children, if you care about your society’s well being and if you care about the environment, switching to organic food is the best thing you could do.

By eating good wholesome organic food, you could lead a healthy, cheerful and fulfilling life, and help the environment at the same time.

Organic Pulses versus Regular Pulses

Pulses provide our body with proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins. They help in reducing bad cholestrol and also in controlling diabetes.

– Chana or Bengal Gram is a high source of protein, especially useful for vegetarian people
– Kabuli Chana or Garbanzo Beans, apart from being a source of protein, have anti-oxidants which can reduce chances of cancer
– Masoor dal red lentils is especially helpful for those suffering diseases due to impure blood.
– Toor dal or Arhar dal or Split Pigeon pea can cure poisoning effect, gas troubles, acidity and piles

The health benefits of pulses are immense.

Unfortunately the benefits are destroyed to a great degree because of harmful agricultural practices. Organic pulses on the other hand not only retain the original benefits of pulses but also remove the harmful side-efects of agricultural practices.

1. Organic pulses have significantly lower levels of harmful fertilizers
2. Pesticides are not used in Organic pulses – hence they are free from harmful side efects of pesticides. Most pesticides are non-biodegradable – hence they stay in the body and cause toxicity to build up
3. Typically, no insectcides are used in organic farms – hence we do not have to worry about their ill-effects
4. Normal preservatives, which may contain string chemicals, are not used in organic pulses

Thus organic pulses are not only safer but also healthier.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in a study, found that eating organic foods provided children with huge protection from exposure to two very harmful organophosphate pesticides that cause long term damages to human body.

One should be aware of these facts and make the correct choice.
