Three years back I was a confused person. I had no clue what I was doing in life.

I was working in a great organization, earning pretty decent amount of money, taking great vacations every year, eating out and generally going places. Yet my internal life was a mess. Was this what I wanted to do all my life?

I used to smoke a pack a day and used to be a compulsive drinker. The stories of corruptions and scandals in the news would make me depressed and frustrated. I tried changing myself many times but they never seemed to work. I would take big bang resolutions and none of them lasted for more than month.

Until one day I caught a break. A friend recommended Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Smoking. Since I had nothing to do, I decided, what the heck let me give it a try.

Long story short, I got hooked into the book, read it in one sitting, stopped smoking completely and have never looked back. I have never felt the urge to have a cigarette after that.

That one step changed my life. I now had the courage to deal with any situation. I felt hopeful of the future and decided to do something meaningful with my life.

The key was to make small but very impactful changes. Here are my five small steps to achieve big goals.

  1. Do not try to change everything at once.

    Take any one item and work on that. I first took up how to stop smoking (albeit accidentally). Then I forced myself to go for walks regularly. After that I decided to reduce eating out and have homemade food. And so on. And because I took them one by one, they worked – some spectacularly, some not so well.

  2. Free your mind.

    Think and learn like a child. Children are fearless and are not afraid to learn new things, analyze and synthesize different ideas and come up with something new.

  3. Do not do what is against your basic nature.

    Some people are meant to be white collar employees and some are meant to be businessmen. It never works out when they try to do each other’s job. You must decide who you are early on and follow that track.

    Amazing people do amazing things. They defy all odds, they dare to do the unthinkable and achieve spectacular results. That is because they realize early on who they are and what they want.Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, have by their sheer grit, extraordinary courage and tremendous willpower, brought about staggering changes to humanity and how human life itself.

  4. Tune yourself out of the noise.

    All the successful people I know do not watch the news or participate in gossip. By avoiding what is depressing and unproductive, they are automatically on the way to happiness.

  5. Stay healthy and eat well.

    Hit the gym, do yoga or cardio, or go jogging – but do something. Eat healthy foods, low on oil. Physical fitness is the prerequisite for being mentally fit.

With these five steps, we cut down on negativity, become positive and cheerful and this enables to achieve big goals. We develop the courage to take bold new steps. Our actions start yielding mind-blowing results.
